The city
With its beautiful setting, the harmonious ensemble of the castle, old town and river in the midst of wooded mountains, Heidelberg is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Year after year, millions of tourists travel here from around the whole world to let themselves be enchanted by Heidelberg’s magic. The Neckar city, with its cultural monuments from the Roman, Baroque and Renaissance eras have been nominated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. With the oldest university in Germany (founded 1386) the city looks back over an 800-year history. Modern Heidelberg combines forward-thinking science and research and is, as a strongly developing economic centre, the bustling heart of the Rhine-Neckar region. Openness and an international flavour are the hallmarks of this city on the edge of the Rhineland. Other popular neighbouring regions are the Black Forest, Alsace (Strasbourg) and the Palatinate (German Wine Road).
The school This is as central as you could hope for! The F+U school complex is in the bustling centre of the city and the Neckar is a mere stone’s throw away. A trip to the castle and Philosopher’s Walk are both highly recommended. 20 multimedia equipped classrooms, an internet café and a library make learning here a pleasure. During breaks, the common-room, complete with terrace, as well as the cafés in the building invite you for a leisurely chat with your colleagues.
Culture and leisure The centre of German Romanticism in the 18th and 19th centuries is also known today as a lively city of culture, combining a sense of tradition with cultural experimentalism. Museums, theatres and the open air arena on the Heiligenberg offer every type of culture. A gathering place for young people is Karlstor station, now converted into a popular arts venue. The Heidelberg Spring Festival, the Castle Festival, the Film Festival in Heidelberg and Mannheim, the Schwetzingen Festival and literature congress are all annual attractions for an international audience. You can, of course enjoy your leisure time in the numerous pubs and cafés in the old town, on a sightseeing tour of the city, or walking in the castle grounds and forests surrounding Heidelberg. A day out to Dilsberg entices the visitor into the romantic atmosphere of this medieval town, while the palace at Schwetzingen, with its expansive parkland and Baroque theatre, brings to life the bygone age of hooped petticoats and powdered wigs. |
